Working for TNT

TNT postal worker

Postmen in Holland are losing their jobs. Fixed contracts are being replaced by ‘flexible’ contracts, full-time postmen by ‘freelance’ postmen. People who have been doing the same round for 31 years are being got rid of and made to reapply for their jobs, but on a freelance basis.

  1. I was working as a postie in Holland when the market was opened up and TNT took over Dutch Royal Mail, and am still glad I decided to leave. Things have gone from bad to worse. In particular TNT’s competitors are terrible employers. To cut costs they’re working with postal deliverers (rather than postmen) who get paid piece wages – lots of them are effectively working for less than the minimum wage. I hope the CWU is in contact with the Dutch trade unions to prevent the same thing is going to happen here in the UK.

  2. Hi Robert, yes I hope the CWU are in contact with the Dutch trade union too. This is almost certainly the model that the Royal Mail have in mind for the future of delivery services in the UK. It was specifically TNT who Peter Mandelson mentioned as a possible buyer in the part-privatisation of the Royal Mail back in May. The Tories are still committed to carrying out this policy.
